How holidaymakers crossed the Umtamvuna River back in 1965
Have you ever wondered how holidaymakers crossed the Umtamvuna River back in 1965? Well, wonder no more. We have the answer in right here in this video!
Talk about A blast from the past.
This video footage of the ferry crossing the Umtamvuna River at the Old Pont has been provided with the very kind courtesy of the Coulson Family.
The footage was filmed towards the end of February 1965. The crossing is from the Transkei side of the river to the KZN (previously Natal) border.
Manual labour was used to move the Pont carrying vehicles across the river. The Pont was operated by the Banners Rest Store. Travellers waiting for the Pont could stay overnight at The Pont Holiday and Water Sports Resort which still exists today and is one of the top holiday and water sports destinations on the KZN South Coast. This is also where we are located! Smack bang in the middle of the Pont.
