Port Edward has a long maritime history, the small resort town was site of a shipwreck in 1552 when the Portuguese galleon San Jaoa ran aground, followed by the San Beuto in 1554. The village was set out in 1925 and named Port Edward in honor of the man who would later become King Edward VIII.
